The Arsenal Art Scene

Discover how the historic Benicia Arsenal—a former 19th-century military reservation—has been brilliantly transformed into a thriving, creative community home to dozens of independent artists, makers, and galleries.

The Creative Hubs: Studios & Galleries

The Arsenal's sprawling, industrial brick buildings now serve as the perfect blank canvas for Benicia's vibrant art community.

Arts Benicia

The beating heart and anchor of the local art community. Arts Benicia is a non-profit organization located in the Arsenal that hosts a continuous rotation of high-quality exhibitions, art classes for all ages, and community events.

Commanding Officers Quarters

Independent Artist Studios

Beyond the main galleries, the old military buildings are subdivided into working studios for painters, glassblowers, sculptors, and mixed-media makers. Walking the halls of these buildings feels like stepping behind the curtain of the creative process.

Downtown Connections & More Glass

The Arsenal's creativity doesn't stay confined to the military base. Highly curated spots like Gallery 621 and ny2ca Gallery proudly represent and showcase the work of many local artists right on First Street. Don't forget to mention the incredible work melting away at the Benicia Art Glass Gallery!

Signature Events

The Arsenal is a working space year-round, but it truly comes alive during these community events.

Benicia Arsenal Artists Open Studios

The premier event of the year. During Open Studios, the public is invited directly into the private workspaces of the artists. It's a rare opportunity to meet the makers, discuss their processes, and purchase art directly from the source.

Downtown Art Walks

Held frequently during the warmer months, downtown First Street transforms into a strolling gallery. These Art Walks often tie back to the Arsenal community, featuring live demonstrations and gallery receptions.

Where History Meets Art

The juxtaposition of the Arsenal is what makes it entirely unique. As you navigate between modern abstract painting studios and contemporary glassblowing shops, you are walking the grounds of a major US Army arsenal that operated from 1851 until 1964.

Look for iconic historical landmarks scattered among the art studios, such as the grand sandstone Clock Tower (originally a military stronghouse) and the imposing Commandant's Mansion.

Did you know?

Many of the spacious, light-filled studios artists use today were originally designed as expansive military storehouses and officer quarters!
